Reviews of the Halle Orchestra - Friday April 15th

"I really enjoyed imagining what the music made me think of and feel. Shepherds' Hey was my favourite. It was really fast, all over in 1 minute 45 seconds!"

OB

"I liked the Superman and Angry Bird themes and the smelly pieces of card (scratch and sniff) really helped it come alive in our imaginiation."

EB

"I enjoyed watching how the musicians played and how the conducter led the perfomance."

OB

"I liked the video game themes because I play games all the time."

LH

"My favourite piece of music was the Final Fantasy piece, it was beautiful and made me feel really happy."

JG

"My favourite part of the performance was the Science theme and I really enjoyed the "Ride of the Valkyries" although some people thought it was called "Flight of the Valkyries" by Wagner. It was really intense.

Allotments Homework Menu

Just in case you're running out of things to do, or chocolate to eat, here's the homework menu for next term.

Science, Music and Revolution

On Friday 15th April we will be celebrating the end of our recent Music Hub project with a trip to Sheffield City Hall to watch the Halle Orchestra performing 'Science, Music and Revolution.'

Details of a similar concert in Manchester are available ( http://www.halle.co.uk/halle-for-youth.aspx ). Why not try and listen to as many pieces as possible over the Easter break?

A letter with full details will follow during the first week of the next term.

Coming Soon - Allotments

Our topic next half-term will be 'Allotments' and will involve discovering where our food comes from, how to grow it ourselves, how to use fresh ingredients to make delicious treats and then sell them on for a profit.

We'll be looking to develop horticultural and enterprise skills and build up to a Y5 Farmers' Market to coincide with Healthy Lifestyles Week in May.

We're planning trips to a local farm and behind the scenes of a local supermarket. We're also hoping to raise some chicks and are taking part in an important national experiment growing seeds that have been into space with Tim Peake! ( https://schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk/getmedia/b065bb02-10a9-408a-8ee2-d1c68afcf1b0/Rocket-Science-Experiment-Booklet )

Our home learning menu will follow in the first week of the half-term. In the meantime enjoy Easter and get out into the garden as much as you can.

Happy New Year from Y5!

This term we'll be learning all about Ancient Egypt and Pharaohs. Our homework menu for the topic is attached below.

We'll be visiting Weston Park Museum for an Egyptian workshop in February, more details to follow. Other enrichment activities this term will include Boxercise classes in PE  a percussion music project with the Sheffield Music Hub which will conclude with a visit to see the Halle Orchestra at the City Hall in April.

Our homework menu for the term is attached below.

Autumn Term - We're going to Space!

This term we're learning all about Space and our Solar System.

We'll be writing newspaper articles and even producing our own TV news reports on the 1969 Moon Landings.

In Science we'll be asking questions such as:

  • What causes day and night?
  • Why do we have seasons?
  • Why does the moon seem to change shape?
  • How big is our Solar System?

We'll even have a go at making a scale model of the Solar System and turning our hands to a bit of rocket science!

We've a really exciting and interesting homework menu to go with this topic for your child to continue learning at home, you can download a copy below.
