Year 3

Summer Term 1

During this half term, our topic is Tremors. The children will primarily be learning all about volcanoes, and will also learn about other national disasters around the world. They will have the opportunity to develop their geographic knowledge and skills in lots of different ways.

In English, we will start by reading the incredible story 'Escape from Pompeii' by Christina Balit. Our writing will focus on developing character and setting descriptions, and putting ourselves in the characters' shoes. We will then do some persuasive writing based around popular holiday destinations.

In Guided Reading we will continue to read The Firework Maker's daughter by Philip Pullman. We will be focussing on our inference, predicting and summarising skills. Please remember to bring in your Reading Record on a weekly basis for it to be checked and signed.

In Maths we will be moving on to time and learning how to tell the time to the nearest minute. We will also continue to develop our understanding of fractions, and will be finding a fraction of an amount as well as finding equivalent fractions.

We will continue to practise addition and subtraction methods, and our times tables will be tested weekly via TT Rockstars.

Our Science topic is all about fossils and soils. We will be studying some real fossils and learning about how they were formed. We will then become soil investigators and find out what is lurking beneath the soil in our gardens.

In PE we will be doing hockey with Miss Sheardown on Tuesdays and rugby with Mrs Musgrave on Wednesdays. Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school (including pumps).

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to speak with us. Watch this space for photos of our fantastic learning!
